Procedure:
1. Photographs- Small Group Activity
a. Each group is given a different picture that shows a different part of life at the Manzanar interrment camp. Groups will work together to answer questions and will then share their answers with the class.
i. What does the photograph depict?
ii. What general feeling do you get from the photograph?
iii. How do you think the people/person in the photograph felt about life in the internment camp?
b. As a whole group, have students identify similarities and differences between the answers from the different groups.
2. Paintings- Whole Group Activity
a. First Impression of Manzanar Painting- as a group discuss
i. What does the painting depict?
ii. What general feeling do you get from the painting?
iii. How do you think the painter felt about life in the internment camp?
b. After a Year at Manzanar Painting- as a group discuss
i. How does this painting differ from the first?
ii. Why do you think the painter did the second painting?
3. Song from Manzanar- Whole Group Activity
a. Read the Song as a Group
i. What is the general feeling you get from the song?
ii. What words or phrases stand out in particular? Why?
iii. How does the songwriter feel about life at Manzanar?
Assessment: Journal Reflection
a. Have you ever had to pose for a photograph and smile even though you were not happy about it? Photographs can be very useful documents, but how do you know if what you are seeing is real or posed? Do you think the photographs from Manzanar were accurate depictions of the way people living in the camp truly felt about how they were being forced to live?
